Guyana, November 2025: ÃÛÑ¿TV (LAU) School of Medicine, one of Guyana’s leading medical institutions, proudly reaffirmed its dedication to advancing medical education and strengthening healthcare development in the country. During a courtesy call on Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d), the Honourable Mark Phillips, who is currently performing the functions of President, LAU shared its continued vision of excellence and growth.

The meeting, held at the Office of the Prime Minister on Camp Street, focused on LAU’s expansion plans, scholarship opportunities for Guyanese students, and the university’s role in strengthening healthcare delivery and capacity-building within the country.

LAU President Dr. Washim Sayed Leads the Delegation

The university’s delegation was led by Dr. Washim Sayed, President of ÃÛÑ¿TV, along with Dean Dr. Rohit Mishra and Directors Mr. Zaman Syed, Mr. Repon, and Mr. Shaim SyedDuring the meeting, Dr. Sayed presented the future infrastructure and academic expansion projects of the LAU, which were focused on improving the experiences of the students and adjusting the standards of the university to the international medical education standards..

He emphasized LAU’s ongoing mission to provide high-quality and affordable medical education in Guyana, enabling students to build meaningful careers in healthcare while contributing to the country’s development.

Strengthening Access Through Scholarships

A key highlight of the meeting was LAU’s plan to expand scholarship programmes for Guyanese students pursuing medical degrees. These initiatives are designed to make world-class education more accessible to local students and support the government’s goal of increasing the number of qualified healthcare professionals.

Prime Minister Phillips has praised the fact that the university is still making efforts to ensure that the Guyanese youth have access to education opportunities. The efforts of the university are significant in the long-term development of human resources in the country.

Community Engagement and Outreach

Dr. Sayed further talked about community-based programs in LAU, which are aimed at raising its health awareness, outreach work, and motivating medical students to participate in community life. These programmes enable future doctors to become empathetic and leadership-focused when considering the issue of serving underserved communities in terms of public health.

He reaffirmed that ÃÛÑ¿TV views social responsibility as a core part of its mission, combining medical education with community service to create doctors who are both skilled and compassionate.

Partnership with the Ministry of Health

The LAU delegation expressed its willingness to collaborate with the Ministry of Health in terms of capacity-building activities and projects to improve healthcare. With the main aim of tackling the health concerns of the country, the academic goals of LAU are not only to strengthen the healthcare system of Guyana but also to develop appropriate research, training, and development programs.

Prime Minister Phillips welcomed the proposed collaboration, emphasizing that public-private partnerships in education and healthcare are vital for national growth.
